Laser Cutter/Engraver Class!

Our two laser cutter/engravers are among the most versatile tools in the entire makerspace. They’re fast, easy to learn, and super-useful for makers and crafters. You can cut acrylic, wood, paper, leather, and fabric — and engrave all of those plus stone, glass, and even some metals. Whether you’re a tinkerer, crafter, artist or hobbyist, a laser cutter provides an incredible range of creative possibilities. This hands-on intro class is your gateway into that world, with a safety-first approach that gets you working quickly and safely.

This class is designed for absolute beginners: No prior knowledge is necessary. You'll learn the basics of using a laser cutter/engraver and take home an engraved slate coaster to use yourself or give away as a gift. These make great gifts for the holidays or any other occasion where you want to make something customized and personal. If you choose to join the makerpace after the class, you can crank out as many of them as you'd like using inexpensive blanks from Michael's, maybe saving yourself some holiday shopping in the process :-)

Each class lasts about two hours, depending on how many students are enrolled (making each person's coaster takes 10-15 minutes). The cost is $20, and includes all materials. You'll work hands-on with the laser, choosing your own unique design, setting up the job and engraving your coaster. When you're done, you'll feel confident to repeat the process on your own. Later classes will cover different materials and projects, but this class alone and an excellent YouTube tutorial we'll refer you to will set you up to explore further on your own. (And we'll of course be here for advice, consultation and encouragement :-)
